Talking with two American friends who are organzing their wedding, we named confetti. They were surprised as in English this word means tiny scraps of multi-coloured paper .
Oh no:Italian confetti are small, almond sweets with a crisp, sugar coating and are essential offering at any Italian wedding, baptism, anniversary, graduation or significant family event.
The traditional ones have almonds in but you can find also those with chocolate inside.
An ages-old tradition however dictates which colour should be used for each occasion:
For weddings: white or ivory. Confetti at weddings are served in a multiple of the number 5 symbolising the 5 good wishes for newly-weds of health, prosperity, happiness, fertility and longevity.
For baptisms: pastel pink or blue
For graduations: red
For engagements :green
For Wedding anniversaries:
1 year pink – 2 years strong pink -20 years orange
25 year silver – 35 years blue -45 years red -50 years gold…………..
They can be served loose in a bowl
Custom packaged in an individual presentation pouch called bomboniera given as a present to the wedding’s guests
In decorative shapes, usually flowers
If you are in Florence let’s go and visit Migone shop:you’ll be lost among candies and chocolate.
If at the moment you have not any of these occasions, try the confetti anyway, just as a treat or gift.
The Italian word for the English paper confetti is coriandoli which are still used at Carnival all over Italy.
