Caramelized onions are a simple and tasty side dish, perfect to accompany cheeses, meats, croutons, and bruschettas

There are many methods to  make the caramelized onions, and this is probably the fastest using an air fryer

Ingredients:

5 medium size red onions (better if Tropea ones)

1 tsp. sugar (granulated or brown)

1 teaspoon honey

Salt to taste

Oil to taste

3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Method

1. Slice the onions thinly.

2. In an air fryer-safe pan, combine the onions with the sugar, salt, a drizzle of oil, honey, and 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar.

3. Cook in the air fryer at 190°/380 °F C for 15 minutes, stirring frequently.

4. Halfway through cooking, add a little more oil and the last tablespoon of vinegar, stir well, and continue cooking until the onions are cooked through.

Tips

• Slice the onions evenly.

Evenly slicing ensures even cooking and prevents burnt or undercooked portions.

• Add the vinegar in two batches.

Add two tablespoons at the beginning and the third halfway through cooking: this helps balance the flavors and ensures well-caramelized onions with a perfect sweet and sour touch.

• Stir the onions frequently.

Serve them hot or let them cool, and preserve them in sterilized bottles.

Caramelized onions are a versatile condiment with a sweet and sour flavor, perfect for contrasting with various ingredients.

• Mature and intense cheeses: Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino, blue cheese, or Gorgonzola.
